Retweets from around the world!

Reham Khan used to do the weather on South Today and Charlie McDermott plays 'Axel' on US comedy 'The Middle', both retweeted me today and then a couple of their followers retweeted them. The system works.

#Storify - SIG

Storify

Lee, Pammy and Matt have begun testing the use of Storify with some classes to try to bring a host of social media resources together in one place and be used as a way of 'disrupting' current thinking and attaining higher levels.

Here is an example.

Initial thoughts suggest the ability to reach higher levels across the following criteria:

Level 8

  • Pupils independently select appropriate information sources and ICT tools for specific tasks, taking into
  • account ease of use and suitability.
  • They take part in informed discussions about the social, economic, ethical and moral issues raised by ICT.

Level 7

  • They combine information from a variety of ICT-based and other sources for
  • presentation to different audiences.
  • They identify the advantages and limitations of different information-handling applications.
  • They select and use information to develop systems suited to work in a variety of contexts, translating enquiries expressed in ordinary language into the form required by the system.
  • They consider the benefits and limitations of ICT tools and information sources and of the results they produce, and they use these results to inform future judgements about the quality of their work.
  • They make use of audience and user feedback to refine and enhance their ICT solutions.
  • They take part in informed discussions about the use of ICT and its impact on society.
It has been discussed that this will be utilised further from Feb on wards when Year 8 begin their storytelling unit, especially for research purposes as there is scope for detailed and 2 way feedback from peers/teachers.

Current Limitations
  • Registration of a twitter account is not necessary but indeed  useful for publicising but setting up too many from school all in one go causes Twitter to block our activity.
  • Google Chrome has to be included on the network as Internet Explorer just cannot handle the dynamic site

Marking KS3 Baseline Tests

The spreadsheet used for marking the KS3 Baseline Test your pupils have taken is in the usual location (newschoolpool\Curriculum\Curriculum areas\ICT\Key Stage 3 Levels\Year 7 cohort 2012).

You may notice that the first tab is uneditable by you. This is intentional. The only way that you can provide the pupils with an accurate baseline level is by completing the tab entitled 'Baseline'. If this is done accurately, the intended level will automatically transfer to the correct column on the correct sheet.

Going forward, this is the way that ALL KS3 work will be marked and tracked, and will also have a direct impact on how WAD CLP is recorded.

KS3 Year 7 Baseline Test

For future reference for use by Wildern School ICT Teachers
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello pupils!

This email details instructions on your Year 7 Baseline Test. Please follow all instructions very carefully...
You work for Wildern Zoo World and have been asked to carry out the following.
TASK 1:
  1. Create a new folder within your Sites/Year 7 ICT Folder called Year 7 Baseline Test
  2. Download the attachment Zoo.xls into your Year 7 Baseline Test folder (Save as...)
TASK 2:
The zoo uses Spreadsheet software to keep track of it's accounts.
From your Year 7 Baseline Test folder, open the file Zoo.xls. Click 'Enable Editing' on the yellow bar at the top of your spreadsheet.
Complete the following details:
  1. Tigers cost £20 to feed per week
  2. Penguins cost £8 to feed per week
  3. There are 3 Elephants
  4. There is 1 Eagle
  5. Look at the formula used in cell E3
  6. In cell E4, write a similar formula to work out the costs of feeding all the Tigers
  7. Complete cells E5 to E11 in the same way
  8. In cell E12, write a formula that calculates the total cost of feeding all the animals in the zoo per week
  9. In cell E14, write a formula that calculates how much money the zoo has left over
SAVE your Spreadsheet!

A new owner has taken over the zoo and has decided to change things around! They have shipped in 3 more Elephants from Africa and because of this the cost of feeding an Elephant has risen by £15 per week. He has also decided to release all of the Alligators into the wild!
  1. Make the above changes to your Spreadsheet
  2. Write the new cost of feeding all the animals in total per week in cell C18
  3. Create a graph or chart to show the total cost of feeding each animal per week
  4. Label your graph or chart correctly including a title
  5. Decide whether to insert your sheet as an object or a new page
SAVE your Spreadsheet!

TASK 3:
The new owner of the zoo has asked you to create a 2 or 3 page presentation to show his partners the changes he has made to the zoo. Your target audience is adults.
Choose an appropriate piece of software
  1. Add a suitable title on the first page
  2. Include the information you have worked on from your Spreadsheet
  3. Using the Internet, insert some relevant images
  4. Include any other relevant information
  5. SAVE your Presentation in your Year 7 Baseline Test folder with the file name Zoo Presentation
TASK 4:
It is decided that because of all the changes being made to the zoo, a fund raising event has been arranged to encourage young families to visit the zoo more often. You have been asked to create a 1 page flyer aimed at advertising this event. Your target audience is young people. Your boss has sent you the following message:
"...Please include all of these details! The Zoo fund raising event is to be held on October 1st 2012 running from 9am - 6pm. Entry for this day only is going to be free. The new animals at the zoo should be advertised - this may well include the use of appropriate images. Show off the name of the Zoo as much as possible. Include events we will be having such as donkey rides and feeding the penguins!
Thanks very much..."
  1. Choose an appropriate piece of software to create your leaflet or flyer
  2. Use all of the appropriate information sent by your boss
  3. SAVE your Flyer in your Year 7 Baseline Test folder with the file name Zoo Advert
TASK 5:
Email your 3 completed documents to your ICT teacher
Log on to your school email account
  1. Compose a new email
  2. Add YOUR ICT teacher's email address
  3. The subject should be Baseline Test
  4. Attach your 3 completed documents (Zoo Spreadsheet, Zoo Presentation and Zoo Advert)
Write a suitable 1 sentence email explaining what you have included

Send email

Thank you!
